From our original post: From elderberry to ashwagandha, explore the top five herbs for immunity, stress relief, and vitality. These time-tested ingredients can support your mind and body in powerful ways—right from your kitchen.
- The five herbs: elderberry, ashwagandha, turmeric, ginger and moringa.
- All are easy to use at home as teas, warm drinks or stirred into food.
- Start with small amounts and see how you feel.
- Herbs are traditional wellness helpers, not medicines.
1. Elderberry
Dried elderberries are traditionally simmered into teas and syrups. Always simmer them rather than eating them raw: uncooked elderberries can upset the stomach. A common method is to simmer a tablespoon of dried berries in two cups of water for about 15 minutes, strain, and sweeten if you like.
2. Ashwagandha
A root used for centuries in Ayurveda, often described as an “adaptogen”. The powder is usually stirred into warm milk or a smoothie. It has an earthy taste, so start with a small pinch. Ashwagandha is not recommended during pregnancy, and people with thyroid conditions or on regular medicines should ask a professional first.
3. Turmeric
A golden kitchen staple. For a simple “golden milk”, warm a cup of milk (dairy or plant-based) with half a teaspoon of turmeric, a quarter teaspoon of ginger, a pinch of cinnamon and a small pinch of black pepper. Turmeric stains, so protect clothes and worktops.
4. Ginger
Fresh in feel, warming in taste. Stir powdered ginger into hot water with lemon and honey, or add it to soups, stews and baking.
5. Moringa
Moringa leaf powder has a mild green taste. Blend a teaspoon into a smoothie, stir it into soups at the end of cooking, or mix it into a yoghurt dip. Begin with half a teaspoon and build up.
Making your own blend
You do not need a special recipe. Choose one herb for a purpose (for example a warming drink) and add one or two flavour partners such as cinnamon, lemon or honey. Change one thing at a time so you know what suits you.

Many people do, in simple recipes. Introduce them one at a time so you can tell how each one suits you.
How long do herbs keep?
Stored in a cool, dry, airtight container away from sunlight, dried herbs and powders keep their quality for many months. See our storage guide.
Are these herbs safe for everyone?
Not always. Pregnancy, nursing, medicines and medical conditions all matter. Check with a healthcare professional first.
