Pumpkin, Sesame and Sunflower Seeds: Everyday Uses

Pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower kernels are among the most-ordered products at FOWA. They are inexpensive, easy to store and useful in almost every kitchen.

In brief

  • Pumpkin seeds: green, nutty, good raw or toasted.
  • Sesame seeds: tiny and rich, white or black, ideal toasted or ground into tahini.
  • Sunflower kernels: mild and slightly sweet, good in baking and salads.
  • Toast lightly in a dry pan to bring out the flavour.

Pumpkin seeds

Also called pepitas when hulled. Eat them as a snack, scatter them over salads, blend into pesto, or stir into porridge. To toast, spread on a dry pan over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring often, until they begin to pop.

Sesame seeds

White sesame is hulled and mild. Black sesame keeps its outer hull, so it has a stronger, slightly bitter flavour. Toast lightly, then sprinkle over rice, vegetables or bread. Grind toasted sesame with a little oil to make a simple tahini. Sesame is a common allergen, so label it clearly if you serve food to others.

Sunflower kernels

Soft and mild, sunflower kernels suit granola, bread, seed bars and salads. Because they are rich in oils, they are best stored in a cool place and used within a few months.

A simple seed mix

Combine equal parts pumpkin seeds, sunflower kernels and sesame seeds. Toast lightly, cool, and keep in a jar. Add a spoonful to porridge, soups, salads or yoghurt each day.

Choosing a size

For home use, 250g to 1kg packs are handy. Shops, cafés and bakers often save by buying 10kg or 25kg sacks, which you can order together on our bulk order page.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy raw or roasted seeds?

Raw seeds are more flexible: you can toast them yourself to the level you like and keep the rest fresher.

How long do seeds keep?

In an airtight container in a cool, dry place they keep well for several months. Seeds with more oil, such as sunflower and sesame, are best used a little sooner.

What is the difference between black and white sesame?

Black sesame has its hull on, so it is a little more bitter and crunchy. White sesame is hulled and milder.
