Whole Herb, Powder or Extract? How to Choose a Format

Many herbs on our shop come in more than one form. Choosing the right one saves money and gives you the result you want.

In brief

  • Whole or cut herb: best for teas, simmering and long storage.
  • Powder: best for blending into food and drinks.
  • Extract: a concentrated form, used in smaller amounts.
  • Read the product description to see exactly what you are buying.

Whole or cut herb

This is the dried leaf, flower, root or bark, whole or cut into pieces. It keeps its aroma longer and is ideal for teas and infusions. Leaves and flowers are steeped; roots and bark are usually simmered.

Powder

The herb ground fine. Powders dissolve or blend into food, which makes them handy for smoothies, soups, baking and DIY capsules. Keep them dry because they absorb moisture and clump.

Extract

An extract is made by drawing the active parts out of the herb to make a concentrated product. Because it is stronger than plain powder, you usually use less. Strength differs between products, so follow the product page and supplier guidance.

Names can be confusing

For example, “Hibiscus Leaf” and “Hibiscus Leaf Powder” are the same plant in two forms. Look at the product name and description to see which you are getting. If in doubt, message us on WhatsApp.

Value for money

Whole herbs and powders are usually the best value. Extracts cost more per kilogram but may go further. Compare the per-kg price shown on each product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is an extract better than a powder?

Can I use powder to make tea?

Yes, but it does not strain out easily. Whole or cut herb gives a cleaner cup.

How do I know how much to use?

Start with small amounts, follow any guidance on the product page, and ask a professional if you take medicines.
